With a view to improving their existing drama facilities Emanuel School appointed Horsley Huber Architects to design a substantial extension to the school’s theatre. The project involved the removal of the roof and side wall of the existing building and the construction of a new pitched roof and timber clad extension. The new facility, with its significantly increased volume, enables the space to be used for both teaching and performances of a professional standard. An acoustically separated sound control room and dedicated entrance foyer space have also been provided. A tension wire grid enables pupils to safely learn the technical skills involved with rigging theatre lighting. The external treatment combines an exposed steel frame with carefully detailed Western Red cedar cladding, bespoke shutters and timber louvers to create a clean and contemporary look.
