Our design for the ‘Room for London’ competition organised by Living Architecture and Artangel, takes its inspiration from rainy days observed from the warm and dry shelter of the hearthside and transposes this onto the city location with its rich views and the demand for another kind of shelter – shelter from turmoil, noise; from the heavy weather of life.
In response to the brief, this single hotel room was designed to be installed on the roof of the Queen Elizabeth Hall at London’s South Bank. The demountable structure was conceived as a layered shelter comprised of four elements: walkway; walled garden; room; bed space.
